Ioway Tribe
"View of the Great Treaty held at (Prairie) du Chien, Sept. 1825, at which were present Gov. Lewis Cass of Michigan and William Clark and upwards of 5000 Indian warriors of the Chippeways, Sioux, Sacs & Foxes, Winnebagoes, Pottowattomies, Menomonies, Ioways and Ottowas tribes." As the Erie Canal opened up the upper Midwest, the U.S. government acted to define the boundaries and limit the territorial claims of the tribal groups on the newly accessible lands. At this meeting, representatives of eight Indian tribes agreed to accept the government's offer to make "an amicable and final adjustment" of competing claims; within 25 years most of them had signed away their lands. Lithograph by Lehman & Duval after a painting by James Otto Lewis.
