Chief Joseph Brant, or Thayendanegea (1742-1807), was a Mohawk chief who fought on the British side. He had visited London, had translated parts of the Bible into the Mohawk language, and had helped the British to put down Pontiac's 1763 rebellion. As a commissioned officer, his help in the Mohawk Valley was crucial to St. Leger's early advance toward the Mohawk River. When the frontier war in New York deteriorated into atrocities on both sides, Brant lost control of the Senecas, who retaliated against an earlier incident with a massacre of settlers at Cherry Creek. At the end of the war, Brant served on a diplomatic mission negotiating indemnities for his people. Painted from life, 1797, by Charles Willson Peale.
