Pawnee Nation
The Pawnee Indian chief Pes-Ke-Le-Cho-Ko. In the 16th century the Pawnee were probably a relatively settled people who lived in present-day Nebraska. By 1800, however, horses had spread northward from the Spanish settlements, and the Pawnees had begun to use the horses to change their life style to migratory. The Pawnees followed the buffalo herds which were an important source of their meat. They were one of the first groups through whose territory wagon trains had to pass along the Oregon Trail.1841 color lithograph by McKenney and Hall.
